WPF Memorial Trophy 2013

Yesterday was the annual WPF Memorial trophy, hosted again this year by ourselves at the Selwyn Samuel Centre Llanelli.
23 clubs entered this year and the judge Ken Holland based in Teighnmouth was from the Western Counties Federation. His scoring was certainly refreshing where scores varied between 5 and 20pts, this made for a very interesting critique (maybe more judges should follow his lead)
One club scored 3 x 20pt prints but still did not win, which shows how a more varied scoring can effect the end result.
 
Each club had 4 prints entered and ours were
Lonely Road by Arthur Lees 16pts
Silence of the iPad by Jennifer Williams 12pts
The Sadhus by Gary Martin 12pts
Clowning Around by Steve Milton 17pts
 
This left us in 6= place at the end with guess who taking the spoils yet again yes you’ve guessed it Tenby with 72pts (know 20’s either)
2nd place went to 3 clubs Bridgend, Cardiff and Inn Focus (last years winners).
 
Thanks must go to all the members who turned up on the morning to help with the set up and all those who managed to support the club during the afternoon judging. Also thanks to the local dignitaries who also graced us with their presence.
 
Not to mention the photographers who recorded the event for posterity? you know who you are. I am sure there will be some memorable images of the day to follow!

Brian Jennings Trophy 2013

On Monday 14th January we had the first external Competition of the year at Trostre CC. We were the defending winners from last year so our expectations were high.
There were 8 clubs competing, Amman Valley, Abertawe, Carmarthen, Pembrey, Tenby, Towy Valley, Trostre and ourselves.
5 Prints from each club and the Judge was Rob Mitchell, after the first 3 rounds we were even with Tenby on 52pts, so it was all down to the last two prints we scored 17 and 20pts and Tenby scored 18 and 20pts. So we lost by just 1pt to our old rivals Tenby.
Over the last 4 years I think we have shared the trophy with Tenby only breaking their run last year.
 
So well done to our entrants, especially Clive for his 20pts

Stanley Chell 2012

Saturday 24th November was the Stanley Chell competition, our entry was with 4 members work.
‘Machyns Pools’ by Clive Martin 16pts
‘Clowning Around’ by Steve Milton 19pts
‘Todays News’ by Joyce Mollet 17pts
‘Gritty Romace’ by Gary Martin 16pts
 
There were 26 clubs entered and after the first two rounds we were 1pt behind the leaders with 36pts, however we fell away in the second half only scoring 32pts when most of the contenders were scoring 39pts.
We finally ended in 10th place on count back (7th on points) so not to bad. Well done to those who were chosen for the entry and thanks to Jackie and Joyce for their company
 
The overall winners were Gwynfa with 75pts, best landscape was by Bridgend, best Monochrome by Neath, best colour print by Gwynfa and a new trophy for best image overall was won by Inn Focus Group.
In second place was Inn Focus, Port Talbot and Bridgend with 74pts and third was Tenby with 73pts.

3 Way Amman Valley Battle Nov 21st 2012

Last night was the Annual 3 way battle at Amman Valley between AV, Carmarthen and Llanelli, it consists of two rounds of 8 projected images and 8 prints. The judge was Ian Ledgard LRPS, AWPF, EFIAP and EPSA
 
After round one of the projected images we were 2pts in front of AV with 139pts AV 137pts and Carms 135pts.
In round two prints we had the best print ‘Sadhus’ by Gary Martin scoring 20pts but AV came away with 137pts, Llanelli 133pts and Carms 129pts
 
So the final totals were
1st AV with 274pts
2nd Llanelli 272pts
3rd Carms 264pts

5 Print Panel 2012

Last Wednesday was the annual 5 Print Panel Comp, this year the judge was Brian Coleman who is the current President of the WPF. He was also the past organiser of the AWPF distinction accreditation.
So Brian is more than qualified to judge such a competition. There were a number of very good entries and in the end he decided to share the best panel between two as shown below, however they were both by the same person namely Joyce Mollet as you might guess.
Joyce is a past expert at such entries having gained an LRPS, ARPS and AWP distinctions in print panels, she has also previously won this competition on several occasions.

Gwynfa Pixels 2012 Results

Last Saturday was the annual Gwnfa Pixels competition, this year 36 clubs entered only 1 short of the all time entry of 37.
We felt we had a fairly strong entry, however after 3 rounds we were only 2pts behind the leaders with our last image by Joyce to come. Normally that would be our banker, but on this occasion it fell short with a score of 13pts. Final scores below

‘The Eye of the Beholder’ by Jennifer Williams 19pts 
‘On the Farm’ by Joyce Mollet 13pts
 
Our final score of 68pts left us in 11th= place, which is on par with the last 4 years. The eventual winners after a countback was Tenby who finished on 77pts with Inn Focus, but Tenby took it with 3 x 20pts and Inn Focus only had 2 x 20pts.
Best colour was won by Tenby and best Monochrome was won by Rhondda.
 
Well done to those who had images chosen and special mention to Steve and Jennifer for both scoring 19pts. Thanks also to Jackie, Alun and Joyce for accompanying me on the day.

Ivor Russell Trophy 2012

A few weeks ago we held the third running of the ‘Ivor Russell Trophy’ previously won by Clive martin two years running. This year we had another excellent entry judged by Nick Jenkins ARPS, AWPF.
We also had members of the Ivor Russell family including his wife as well as the Nia Griffith MP, Town Mayor, Rural and County Councillors and others.
The members provided an excellent buffet and a good night was had by all. After the excellent critique by Nick the eventual winner was Joyce Mollet LRPS, ARPS, AWPF with an image of a local farmer.

2012 Summer Challenge

The last challenge before the club returned to normal after the summer break was our annual ‘Summer Challenge’ this year organised by last years winner Peter Morgan.
He set the scene on the night by choosing a link to the 2012 Olympics, with the word ‘Medals’ from this 6 themes were set

We all met at 7pm and had approx 2hrs to gather our shots based on the individual themes and return to Weatherspoons to download and fill up with well earned sustenance.
When we returned to the club for our first night after the break on September 5th all the images from each theme were shown and a winner from each selected, when all the winners were completed this gave us an overall winner Andrew Johns who this year was presented with his gold medal by Peter Morgan & Peter Williams (Int Comp Sec).

Ken Jones Trophy Results

Last night was the second running of the ‘Ken Jones’ Trophy and we were pleased to welcome again Mark Mathias the nephew of Ken who sponsored the trophy.
The judge was one of our longtime members Andrew Richards who gave a very interesting and worthy appraisal of the 36 images entered.
Yet again Gary Martin came out on top with a simple portrait of a local gentleman called ‘John’ this can be seen in our winners gallery on the right.
